A BIGGER VISION

Recognising the need for a larger intervention for the 'most vulnerable' children of Masibambane Creche and a need for a bigger vision by Jabulani Myeza the Founder of YOC.

The Masibambane Creche finds itself in the middle of a very poor community in the rural area of Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. The result is that the children at the Creche are vulnerable, the majority affected by HIV/AIDS in some way and resulting in orphaned children. Although the number of HIV positive children at the Crèche is unknown due to the fact that they are not asked to be tested or required to disclose their status on admission, there are those known to the staff as well as orphans who have lost their parents due to HIV.

The Crèche was established in 2007 and named the crèche Masibambane which translated from Zulu means “Lets hold each other”. The creche currently host about 60 kids in a run down rented room with no proper infrastructure for early childhood development. A piece of land has been secured through the local Chief to build an Educare Centre.

This development would be a project of the Youth of Choice Organization and Masibambane Creche (See http://www.youthofchoice.org/services.html). The plan is for the Educare Centre to incorporate a Creche catering for the 'poorest of the poor' and to meet the statutory acceptable standards. The proposed building will have two play rooms for Levels I and II, a computer room, kitchen, sick room, committee room. The large kitchen where meals are prepared in the day for children and staff could also provide a facility to teach nutrition to parents. If funds accommodated a committee room, these rooms would provide areas for lifeskills for local women, HIV support groups for children and a social worker's office (orphan identification, child abuse, emergency needs etc).

There would also be a large outside play area with a jungle gym and a food garden taken care of by the children. The idea of the Educare Centre is to integrate it with the community and be an expression of sicial change.

To put this vision into action, help is now required. How can you help or do you know someone who can help?. Help us to help this orphans and vulnerable children to make this dream a reality. Get in touch with us at, info@youthofchoice.org

YOC IN BRIEF

YOC is an emerging youth movement of choice for social change. We give young people a chance to become positive role models in society, regardless of gender, disability, ethnicity, social background or religion. Through outreach projects, educational campaigns and support programmes, we help create opportunities for young people to bring social change in communities affected by violence, poverty and disease.

A team of Change Agents from all sectors of society support YOC. As role models, these volunteers inspire the youth and raise awareness about Youth of Choice internationally. Our aim is to engage key decision-makers from the development, sport, business, media and government sectors and further ensure every young person benefits from our high impact programmes.

Each month, we reach about 500 young people through regular programmes, special activities and events. This is made possible by our partners and volunteers.
