WHY A NEED FOR A FRESH NEW LOOK WEBSITE, OUR FOUNDER EXPLAINS

Yoc-header-2

Goal:  Is to create a call to action via a digital platform using the power of the website to get young people to take action on casues that they care about.

To accomplish this monumental task, there is a need to re-invent the Youth of Choice digital platform, www.youthofchoice.org. The new site will enable young people — wherever they are to:

To action: Inspires positive action, connects young people with causes they care about and offers tools needed to take action.

Donate: Visitors to the site can easily donate to the Youth of Choice campaigns.

Share: The site to provide simple tools and ideas for young people to leverage their own social media platforms to start their own campaigns. It must also let visitors create club profiles,  upload photos of their campaigns and share their campaigns.

In addition, the site will maximize online activity related to Youth of Choice activities, including Twitter, Facebook, Google+, YouTube, Blog and Mxit.

The new website will help leverage our new brand strategy, which includes a new marketing strategy, social platforms, mobile app (not yet) and the new stacked logo without the icon.  The stacking of words with a new tag line, is simple, yet seamlessly evokes a call for action to young people. The powerful tag line will help us to make a call to action everytime, while collectively urging young people to take positive action. Throughout the re-branding phase we have engaged our target market and media properties to utilize the logo in a variety of unique and supportive ways.

Collective Visibility

Graphic t-shirts, caps, hoodies, pins, sweatbands and stickers will be available for purchase through the Youth of Choice offices. Young people are encouraged to wear Youth of Choice products while taking action to show their support for our great cause.

Inspiring action

The formation of Youth of Choice and the creation of the Youth of Choice brand are both solid testaments to the power and efficiencies that can be unlocked when young people are given the platform, resources, information and activation strategies to change the world for the better.

We are going LIVE this Friday, 11 November 2011 and we look forward to hear your feedback on the site. Many thanks to our creative team from SnazzBiz and our staff at the office for their input.

KICKING THE STREETS with Children and Youth living in the streets

Img_4613

In partnership with HONCHOS, Youth of Choice organized an event called “Day of Hope” for children and youth living in the streets. This event was part of a project called “Kicking the Street” which aims to transition street children out of the street life. The bigger goal is to have a drop in center for them, an aftercare program and re-unify them with families.

Take Action Today, start collecting Jeans for Hope...It's your time to make a difference

276999_219202478134625_1224495

You always wanted to do something good. Here is your time make a difference. Are you a young vibrant and dynamic leader in your community, at your school? Do you want to take action and help a non-profit organization of your choice (Youth of Choice) to drive this campaign?

We are looking for volunteers to run the JEANS 4 HOPE campaign in schools, cummunities etc. Help us collect jeans in wearable condition and all jeans collected will be handed over to local shelter home and children living in the streets. Start your own JEANS 4 HOPE drive today.

Follow these simple easy steps:

TAKE ACTION

1.       GET PERMISSION

You don't want to get on your school principal's bad side so first make sure that he or she is okay with running a drive at your school.

2.       GET EVERYONE ON BOARD:

Recruit all your friends, your teammates, people in your classes, etc to help you out. Pull out all stops if you have to - it's for a good cause!

3.       MAKE IT EASY:

Set up a jeans collection bin in the front of your school library and in the lunchroom or offer to pick up jeans from classes or houses.

4.       SPREAD THE WORD:

Promote your drive. Make more posters and flyers and use your creative energy to decorate the drop-off boxes. Post stickers on your notebooks or create Jeans 4 Hope t-shirts. The more people who know, the more jeans you'll get!

5.       USE YOUR VOICE:

Make an announcement over the PA system during morning announcements or breaks. Or talk to people during lunch, in between periods or at halftime of a sport game and shout out the cause.

6.       DOCUMENT YOUR DRIVE:

Take pics of all the jeans you've collected and send them to us.

7.     CHALLENGE YOUR FRIENDS:

Have classes compete to see who can collect the most. Or have your teachers agree to do crazy things if you hit certain goals. Just make it fun!

8.       CLOSE IT DOWN:

Officially end the drive by posting the number of jeans you collected in the main reception area or lunchroom and/or make an announcement over the loud speaker

9.       DONATE THE JEANS:

Drop off your jeans at Youth of Choice offices, 134 Loop Street between October and November 25, 2011.

10.    REPORT BACK:

Don't forget to let the teacher in charge on community outreach and the Principal know how many jeans you've collected. Submit your report and all your awesome photos and stories to jeans4hope@youthofchoice.org

*CLIMATE ACTION NOW! Glaciers are melting, the sea degree is rising,
rainfall designs are changing which there have been increases within the
number of droughts, floods, mudslides, as well as heat waves. This is
climate change, the biggest issue is that it’s happening right now and we
are the cause. It’s affecting everyone. Now the question for all of us,
“Who Are You On Earth”*

* *

*Youth of Choice officially launch their climate change campaign called "Who
Are You On Earth". This campaign is led and driven by Youth of Choice
Council which took to the streets recently to create awareness, encourage
the public to go for GREEN smart choices and educate the public about the
importance of climate change crisis. *

* *

*Why the youth? Our youth will inherit climate change. Although impacts are
being felt now, more troubling effects are projected to occur in the next 50
-100 years. *

* *

*How will the youth be affected? More severe weather events, the spread of
disease, and water shortages just to name a few. If the crisis around
climate change has to change, this generation of young people must take
action and minimize the climate change impact that will affect their future.
They need the information and must make a stand on climate change, as well
as be a part of the solution, now and in the future. Because of this, our
Youth of Choice Council has taken action be involved in this crisis and
promote greener smart choices.*

* *

*“The youth must take action to reduce the actual impact of climate change.
It’s really a matter of choice; an individual choice all of us must make
right now. The aim of the Who Are You On Earth campaign is to educate young
people about climate change crisis, impacts, and solutions. Mobilize young
people to take action and empower young people with the information to
successfully go for greener smart choices. We will also be making demands to
our local municipalities for political action on climate change crisis and
we hope our efforts will go well beyond the COP17 climate change conference
in Durban” says Bantwana Zulu, the Youth of Choice Council President.*

Take control of your body & your future.

Teenage_pregnancy

Our beautiful and beloved Youth of Choice Ambassador Aphelele Dladla recently reached out to young people in Thornvile Primary School. With the support of Miss Pietermaritzburg 2010 and Youth of Choice Ambassador, Aphelele Dladla, Youth of Choice has come up with a campaign "FACE 2 FACE" to tackle the high rates of teenage pregnancy in schools. The FACE 2 FACE campaign aims to educate and empower youth to take control of their reproductive sexual health and futures. The message from Aphelele Dladla, "Love your yourself and make the right choices, bad choices will affect your future. Our parents and teachers needs to be lot more open and start talking to children about sexual issues. I'm shocked to hear that kids are getting pregnant as young as 12 and this requires urgent call to action to educate and empower our children to make all the right choices"

"Make a Difference Day"

Img_3270

"Make a Difference Day". Youth of Choice Volunteers recently teamed up to paint a local school basketball court as part of the Sport for Social Change community outreach program.

What is a Sport for Social Change program?

Sport for Social Change is a community outreach program that uses the sport of basketball as a tool to encourage positive social change in the areas of leadership, education and health. The program provides young people with the opportunities and resources that are critical to their future success and development. The program delivers fundamental basketball instruction and life skills for players, teachers, coaches, officials and hope to reach 5000 participants by the end of the 2013.

Achievements and overall project progress:

Sport for Social Change program has reached more than 500 young people, 12 coaches, 10 teachers in UMgungundlovu District Municipalities this year, such as Mpofana, Umngeni, Msunduzi, Mkhambathini and Impendle. Through the funding received from the NLDTF this program will culminate with a Legacy Project, which includes the creation of safe places where kids can learn or play, training of coaches & tournaments.

The benefits young people receive from Sport for Social Change reach well beyond the playing field. SFSC empowers children to become productive adults, engage in healthy lifestyles, manage life’s challenges and become leaders within their communities.

ONE PAIR GOES A LONG WAY

In June and July this year we asked young people to GO BAREFOOT FOR THE DAY and DONATE SHOES to our SHOES 4 HOPE campaign. Young people took action, walked part of the day and some the entire day barefoot. Our SHOES 4 HOPE campaign challenged young people to put themself in someones else shoes and know how it feels like for some children who walk barefoot to school or can't go to school because they don't have shoes. With no education, their future does'nt look very bright. Having a pair of shoes will also help to play sport, fetch water and prevent them from soil-transmitted diseases. Local Pietermaritzburg schools such as TWC, Heritage Academy, Pietermaritzburg Girls High School, New England Primary, St Nicholas High School,  responded to our Call to Action and got their pupils involved and encourage their friends to get involve.

Through our partnership with CINDI NETWORK, Youth of Choice has handed over more than 1072 pairs of shoes to community based organizations which deals with vulnerable children, with a special focus on HIV and AIDS. We hope this shoe drive campaign will bring a sense of HOPE and DIGNITY to vulnerable children. As we would like to think, "ONE PAIR GOES A LONG WAY". Our CHAMPIONS 4 change in schools and our project management have done a great job running this campaign.  We need more CHAMPIONS 4 change to drive this campaign inside the schools next year and if you think you can TAKE ACTION and make a difference through this campaign, please contact our office at 033 342 2394 or email us at info@youthofchoice.org

About Youth of Choice

Youth of Choice is non-profit organization that inspires young people to take action and make a difference in their schools, campuses, communities and the world. Our aim is to be a leading global youth movement of choice by 2030 with at least 10 000 000 young people taking action, inspiring social change and driving positive impact. The young people TAKING ACTION and INSPIRING CHANGE to solve social challenges, we like to call them the "Youth of Choice". We target vibrant and dynamic young people between the ages of 14 and 24 years old who are passionate about social change. We use the power of online media platforms and popular youth culture to draw the attention of young people to take action. If they got an original idea about how to make change in their community or their school or their campus, Youth of Choice can help you to make it happen.

Young Women Taking Action!

On 09 August 2011, South Africa commemorated the march of 1956 when women from across the racial spectrum protested against the carrying of pass books. Youth of Choice organized a Face 2 Face Seminar as part of their initiative on Women’s Day 2011 focused on giving young girls the platform to talk to one another about social challenges they see in their communities, issues that are affecting them as young women in society & inspire them to take action to tackle those issues.

“We as Youth of Choice we believe young women have the power to change the world and given the platform they can do greater things that can change the world”, says Jabulani Myeza the Founder of Youth of Choice.

Prominent issues that came out during the seminar, high levels of teenage pregnancy, peer pressure, sugar daddies, social justice and climate change.  These girls have made a choice to take action on some of these important issues through the creation of Youth of Choice Clubs which promotes the involvement of young people in community service in a fun, easy and meaningful way.

Youth of Choice is a non-profit organization that inspires young people to make a difference in their schools, campuses and communities.

What happen in Norway?

Tragedy struck in Norway this past weekend when the peaceful nation experienced a terrorist attack from a native Norwegian suspect Anders Behring Breivik who trained at a secret paramilitary field camp in Belarus earlier this year. At least 76 people were killed on July 22, 2011, when a Norwegian extremist bombed a government building in Oslo, the country’s capital, and later went on a shooting spree at a youth camp near the city. At least 65 of the victims were young people. Anders Behring Breivik, the alleged perpetrator of the Oslo terrorist attacks on Friday, as a Christian fundamentalist. His 1,500-page manifesto — 2083 A European Declaration of Independence — and an accompanying video reveal a more complex picture. Aside from his interest in Christianity, Breivik appears to have studied aspects of esotericism and neopaganism.

This is what South Africa and the world can learn from a german newspaper article: "Even in their deepest sorrow the Norwegians don't get hysterical. They resist the hate. It is amazing to see how politicians and the whole country reacts. They are sad to the deepest thread of their souls. They cry in dignity. But nobody swears to take revenge. Instead they want even more humanity and democracy. That is one of the most remarkable strengths of that little country."

The soon to be launched YOC clothing brand

Yoc_apparel

It's here, the new YOC clothing line. When you buy a YOC tee shirt, you are not just buying apparel; you are investing in a process that will help spread the movement of choice for social change and supporting the long-term sustainability YOC. YOC Apparel is about “aspire to inspire” change.

The look and feel good of the brand will be fresh, hip and edgy. It redefines street smart fashion and for starters it will have tee shirts, hoodies, beanies, vets and caps. The launch of a YOC clothing apparel brand should be in the fourth term of 2011.

This will be followed by elements of the range being made available through selected local independent retail outlets. International distribution is likely to start in 2015 with plans for business social partners and a roll-out strategy well underway. In addition, an e-shop (YOC SHOP ONLINE) element to a standalone website will allow individuals worldwide to purchase items from the range online.

“The launch of the YOC Apparel is a significant step in YOC pursuit of the sustainability needed to take forward our outreach projects, advocacy awareness and prevention campaigns. YOC has evolved to become much more than just an organization but an movement of choice inspiring “call to action” to address the broader social issues in our society facing young people. To do this effectively, YOC needs reliable and sustainable income generating streams, something we believe the YOC Apparel can significantly contribute to.” said Jabulani Myeza the founder of YOC.

We want the YOC Apparel to be a globally recognized and a brand of choice for smart young people. The YOC Apparel will appeal to cool, fresh and affluent young people around the world. Part of our commitment is to have a positive impact messages with our new clothing line and leverage on the fusion elements such as music, dance and fashion through popular hip culture. “We are very mindful of the social responsibility we have to balance the commercial aspect of the new clothing line and vision of Youth of Choice as an organization for positive social change,” added Jabulani.

In creating the YOC Apparel, YOC will create new division, YOC 4 LIFE, to ensure the integrity and values of YOC filters across the entire brand.

“The vision with YOC Apparel is to create a global fashion brand that can stand alongside international apparel brands. We are now working on putting together a part time creative design team to look at the range of tee shirts that will have some cool and fresh design elements that speak of YOC brand in an innovative and funky way”, said Jabulani.

Although the full launch range will be revealed sometime next year, a dedicated creative design team at YOC 4 LIFE will create fashion-forward thinking brand, yet truly wearable range that will find young admirers across a broad section of society rocking and rolling in YOC Apparel. The YOC Apparel range will stand out for its many unique design twists, which help underscore a cool and fresh, yet very exciting connection to the organization. In addition, we will invite guest designers – both national and international – will create specific items for the YOC Apparel.

Our organization is emerging powerful enough to try new concepts. We are saying to young people, you can still look cool, change the world and your community. Wearing YOC Apparel brand is part of a statement of making smart choices and be part of a movement of leaders of social change.

WE GIVE MORE THAN JUST FOOD & TOYS, YOUTH OF CHOICE GIVE'S HOPE TO THE NEEDY

Today our founder, @JabulaniMyeza handed over food groceries and educational toys to the care givers who looks after the orphans & vulnerable children of Masibambane Educare Centre. Many children from the centre live in situation of extreme poverty. For them this means malnutrition, hunger, disease, lack of education and other social problems linked to the scarcity of economic resources. We hope these toys will bring a moment of fun and food bring a bit of hope to these kids. The children from the centre are from poor families, child headed homes because parents have died due to HIV/AIDS and orphaned. As Youth of Choice we have taken the huge responsibility of adopting the centre as an activation partner to help raise the necessary resources and material to help them realize their bigger vision of building a better facility for the centre. Our organization has achieved measurable success during the last year in providing basic educational material, training of care givers who look after the kids and donating toys to nearly 90 kids at the centre. The care givers are all unpayed 6 volunteers. We are doing our beat to make a difference. Can you help or do you know someone who can help? Together, we can make a difference.

Reach & Teach HIV testing campaign launches today at Varsity College

Reach & Teach HIV testing campaign launches today at Varsity College in Pietermaritzburg. The campaign uses the emotional power of dance and music to engage, educate and inspire the youth to get tested for HIV/AIDS.

This testing campaign, aims to encourage young people particularly students in schools and tertiary to get tested for HIV and know their status.

This campaign will soon be rolled out to other schools, universities and community halls. Varsity College in partnership with Youth of Choice and other organizations took an initiative to educate their students on sexual health and the importance of knowing ones HIV status. Those who got tested today received free tee shirts and caps from Youth of Choice as incentives. Youth of Choice in association with the local hip hop dance crew (Pradators) have found a new innovative way to activate and energise the students to get tested.

"Ultimately the campaign aims to change behavioral patterns and mobilse young people to take action against HIV/AIDS through alternative artistic methods. Youth of Choice fully endorses the South African government's new HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT) Campaign that aims to test a total of 15 million people throughout South Africa by June 2011", said Jabulani Myeza, the founder and chairman of Youth of Choice.
